Power in supporting diverse brands
Our ability to choose is a powerful tool. Just as there is power in choosing brands that protect people and the planet, there is power in choosing businesses owned by marginalised peoples. Supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) owned brands is a tangible way to be an ally. It helps BIPOC communities share in the economic opportunities available, brings different perspectives to the fore, and celebrates diversity in an otherwise white-centric industry.
The Black Lives Matter movement came to a head in 2020, calling for an end to systemic racism and inequality across many facets of our society, including fashion. Inspired by this movement, many of you asked us for sustainable black-owned rated brands to support. In response, we looked at how to address racial justice issues and ensure we recognise and elevate BIPOC owned clothing brands that do good for people, the planet, and animals.
While the ownership and ethos of each brand unifies them in this list, they are unique in their own right, creating distinctive collections through their particular creative lens. This list is not exhaustive—there are countless other BIPOC owned clothing brands that deserve our support and we will continue to update this list as we rate more.
